Health, Safety and Sustainable Development
We are all concerned
about our environment, regardless of nationality, race, religion or
political disposition. And we do have reason to worry. Waste and
pollution which are challenging the environment are increasing
continuously, despite growing environmental awareness.
Finland has quickly developed into one of the world’s fastest growing
industrial economies, but not at the cost of our environment. Our
environmental legislation has always been among the strictest, if not
the strictest on the planet, so environmental issues are taken very
seriously.
That explains why Finland has a long tradition in developing
environmental technologies, and why Finnish environmental
high-tech-companies are so committed to the cause. Promoting health,
safety and environmentally sustainable development is essential, not
to mention good for business.
Modern companies want to live up to their responsibilities as good
corporate citizens, and project a strong environmental image, since it
gives them a competitive advantage on the international market.
Expansive economic growth tends to take its toll. Unfortunately, it is
often the environment that has to pay the price. The stockpiling of
waste electrical and electronic equipment, WEEE, such as TV sets,
radios, computers and mobile phones, is a living example of that.
The e-waste challenge is yet another problem that can be solved. As a
matter of fact, Finnish Samill Recycling Ltd has already solved it.
Samill has proved that it is possible to recycle all e-waste in an
environmentally sustainable, and what’s more, a financially profitable
manner.
However, Samill is still looking for new ways and means to improve its
technology and cut costs. This is very important, because sufficient
environmental technology must be made available to all at a reasonable
price. Environmental issues are truly a common concern.
